You Don’t Have to Wait Until You’re in Pain to Take Care of Your Body By Street Physical Therapy | Move Well. Stay Well

I’m going to let you in on something I wish more people understood about physical therapy:

You don’t have to be injured to benefit from it.

In fact, I’d argue that some of the best time to work with a physical therapist is before something hurts.

As a physical therapist and Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist, I’ve worked with people across different stages of life—from athletes looking to perform better, to adults trying to stay active, to older adults who simply want to keep doing the things they love.

And one thing continues to stand out:

Our bodies are meant to move.

But life makes it incredibly easy to stop.

We sit at desks. We drive. We work from home. We spend hours on our phones. We get busy taking care of everyone else and suddenly realize we haven’t moved much all day.

Then one day, your back hurts when you get out of the car.

Your hips feel stiff when you stand up.

The stairs don't feel quite as easy.

Your balance isn't what it used to be.

Or you realize that the activities you once did without thinking now require more effort.

That doesn't mean your body is “getting old.”

It means your body is asking for attention.

Movement is one of the best forms of self-care.

You don't need an hour at the gym.

You don't need expensive equipment.

And you certainly don't need to be an athlete.

Sometimes it's as simple as getting up from your chair every hour.

Taking a walk.

Working on your balance.

Strengthening your legs.

Moving your hips and spine through comfortable ranges of motion.

Practicing getting down to and back up from the floor.

Or spending five minutes intentionally moving instead of scrolling.

Small things, done consistently, add up.

That's a big part of why I created the Move Well | Stay Well philosophy.

I want movement to feel approachable.

Not intimidating.

Not complicated.

And not something you only think about when you're hurt.

Physical therapy can be about more than pain.

Of course, helping people recover from pain and injury is a huge part of what I do.

But I also love the preventative side of physical therapy.

I want to help people ask:

“What can I do now so I can keep doing what I love later?”

Maybe that's playing with your kids.

Hiking.

Gardening.

Traveling.

Golfing.

Running.

Lifting weights.

Walking your dog.

Getting on and off the floor with your grandchildren.

Or simply getting out of bed in the morning and feeling confident in your body.

Those things matter.

Your physical health isn't just about a number on a chart or how much weight you can lift.

It's about your ability to participate in your life.

So here's my challenge for you today:

Don't wait for pain to be your reminder to move.

Stand up.

Take a walk around the block.

Do 10 controlled squats to a chair.

Practice standing on one leg while holding onto a countertop.

Roll your shoulders back.

Take a few deep breaths.

Stretch.

Move your hips.

Do something that feels good and purposeful.

And then do it again tomorrow.

You don't have to completely overhaul your lifestyle overnight.

Start with five minutes.

Build from there.

Because staying active isn't just about how you feel today.

It's about building a body that can continue to support the life you want to live for years to come.

That's what Move Well | Stay Well means to me.

Move more. Move better. Stay strong. Stay independent. Stay well.

And most importantly—

Don't wait for your body to break down before you start taking care of it.
